Chapeau bas! Hats off!
Kolberg used to call it “the land of milk and honey”. Not one bit of exaggeration in that statement! Welcome to the Kuyavian-Pomeranian province, a region as much “nourishing” as fascinating. Its name comes from the old times, when People spoke Old Polish. It is a combination of two words: “kui”, meaning: “wind”, and “jawa”, meaning: “to appear”. It relates to strong winds, common in this part of the country. You’d better hold your hats in your hands! It is also here where famous lakelands are located: Chełmno, Brodnica, Dobrzyń, Krajeńskie and Kuyavian Lakelands. There are also two artificial water basins – Włocławek Reservoir in the Middle Vistula flow and Koronowo Reservoir. Apart from lakes you can admire terminal moraines here, to a large extent covered with forests.
Chernozem and folk culture
You could say that Kuyavia is a land of two elements – the abovementioned wind and earth or rather swampy chernozem, strictly speaking – very fertile soil, facilitating farming and guaranteeing larger crop yields.
Attachment to the land is a characteristic feature of people in this region. Anyway Kuyavian-Pomeranian people are notorious for cultivation of tradition. Inhabitants of the province are still very strongly rooted in their history and they foster their distinct culture, passed from father to son, as the old saying goes. Here people create unique music and folk art. It is here where festivals and folklore reviews are most often organized.
Biskupin
Kuyavia is not just folklore, lilts and dance – there are also plenty of historical monuments. It is enough to mention medieval grads – buildings of Romanesque style, which remember even the times of first Piasts. Old town city halls and necropoles in a form impossible to find anywhere else. One cannot fail to mention Biskupin – the place which every Pole read about in history textbook. That is right – it is here where Lusatian settlement was located for twenty five hundred years. These days, after restauration, it is ready to host thousands of tourists every season and became an attraction notorious even beyond the borders of our country.
Pyramids
You should also pay a visit to Wietrzychowice near Izbica Kujawska – here you will see pyramids, the only of this sort, where tribal chiefs, sorcerers and shamans were buried. Unfortunately only a bunch of those building stood the test of time and survived to this day.
Toruń gingerbread
The most important city in the region is undoubtedly and undisputedly Toruń. It has been entered into the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is the city of Copernicus, gingerbread and architectonic monuments. Toruń is wonderful, so it is easy to fall in love at the first sight. Its panorama, seen from the left Vistula bank, has been hailed one of the seven wonders of Poland. And rightly so!
